The Northern Grampians region is located in the western part of Victoria, Australia, covering an area of approximately 5,000 square kilometres. It is home to a diverse landscape, rich history, and a strong sense of community. Here's a brief history of the region:

Before European Settlement

Before European settlement, the Northern Grampians region was occupied by the Djab Wurrung and Jardwadjali Indigenous tribes. These tribes lived off the land, hunting kangaroos, possums, and emus, and gathering fruits and nuts.

The Northern Grampians region was also rich in mineral resources, especially gold. The Indigenous tribes had a limited knowledge of gold mining but did not utilise it. The arrival of Europeans changed everything.

European Settlement

The first Europeans to explore the Northern Grampians region were Hamilton Hume and William Hovell in 1824. However, it was not until the 1840s that Europeans began to settle in the area. The first Europeans to settle in the region were sheep graziers who established large sheep stations, such as Mount William Station, Mount Zero Station, and Stapylton Station.

The discovery of gold in the area in the 1850s brought more people to the region. This led to the establishment of towns such as Stawell, Ararat, and Halls Gap. The gold rush also brought a large influx of Chinese immigrants who worked on the goldfields.

Development of the Region

The Northern Grampians region continued to develop throughout the late 19th century. The construction of the railway in the 1870s facilitated the transportation of goods and people to and from the region. This enabled the region's agricultural industry to grow, with wheat and sheep farming becoming increasingly important.

The start of the 20th century saw the region become a popular tourist destination. The stunning natural beauty of the Grampians National Park drew visitors from all over Australia and abroad. The region's tourist industry grew, with the establishment of guesthouses, hotels, and other tourist facilities.

The region has also played a significant role in Australia's military history. During World War II, the Royal Australian Air Force established an airfield in Stawell. The airfield was used for training pilots and was also home to the RAAF's Fighter Sector Control Centre.
