Distinguished and Famous people from Northern Grampians

✍️ Marcus Clarke

Marcus Clarke tried station life at Swinton and Ledcourt, with headquarters at Glenorchy, before establishing his literary career in Melbourne. The district later appeared in his satirical Bullocktown sketches, turning country observation into published material. His uncle had an interest in the properties, giving the young arrival from England an opportunity to acquire colonial experience. Plans to take up land came to nothing after a disastrous journey into drought-stricken New South Wales. Journalism proved a better fit. The author later associated with For the Term of His Natural Life had first encountered Australian working life through an uncertain mixture of family assistance, rural employment and ambitious plans. Glenorchy belongs to that formative period, when an observant young man was collecting material even while trying to discover an occupation.
